Math and Science
Happy Thanksgiving (super short) week! In math this week we are going to be doing an activity called Thanksgiving Ratios. As we have just started our ratios chapter, this activity is timely and meaningful. Students will be given scenarios where they have to "buy" Thanksgiving foods from various stores. They will need to calculate the unit price of each item to figure out what to buy where. I'm sure many families can relate this week! In science, we will begin reading our next chapter. Chapter 3 is about plate boundaries and formations. More to come! English Language Arts, Reading and History In this short week, we are totally concentrating on completing a graphic organizer for our Egypt project. The plan is to organize the information from research and put information into their own words. We continue in The Lightning Thief and we'll read a class play about mummies. Math- TEST TUESDAY
The big news this week is that we are having a test on Tuesday! This test is on all of the lessons of chapter 4, along with vocabulary. A study guide that is *very* similar to the actual test will be done Monday in class, with an additional practice test for homework due Tuesday. Optional online extra credit (found in the homework tab of the online math book) will be due Wednesday, though is preferred on Tuesday. For the remainder of the week, we'll be starting chapter 1: Ratios! As grades close on Friday for term 1, binder checks will also be conducted the first couple of days of this week. Throughout the term important papers from all classes have been numbered and listed for students to see and put into their binders accordingly. The binder checks happen at the end of each term and count as a test grade. Consistent organization is an important skill that students need to learn. The math and science list can be found here. Science- OPEN NOTES/BOOK QUIZ FRIDAY This week we are finishing up our studies on Earth and Space science for term 1! This last lesson focuses on galaxies and the dark matter in the universe. As this is a quick lesson, there will be a brief quiz on Friday, just in time for grades to close! English Language Arts, Reading and History Writing and History: We begin our mini-research project on Ancient Egypt today. There will be time in class to do the minimal research necessary to complete a short paper on the topic of choice. The project part will be done at home. Please check Google classroom under Egyptian Museum for the ongoing process. Each week will have one or two checkpoints for me to check progress on this assignment but the whole paper and project will be part of the 6th grade Egyptian Museum on December 12. Reading : The Story of My Life in our Study Sync book continues with a review of connotation and denotation. We will be doing a close read with a discussion of vocabulary and we will continue to find evidence to write a constructive response. Greek and Latin roots vocabulary is going well. My next step is to have students understand that these roots are the building blocks and key to understanding much more complicated words. This week is -temp, -loc, and -chron. We continue to read The Lightning Thief and Massachusetts Book Award books. Grammar: Students did a great job at identifying complex and compound sentences in Typing for Accuracy. We'll have some practice writing before we move on to sentence fragments. Math

Students should be sure to begin reviewing material early so they are not cramming at the last minute. Vocabulary words will also be tested. Science We are gong to be learning about galaxies this week and next week in science. This is a short lesson, taken out of a chapter that we will not fully be covering due to science standards. Students will learn about the Big Bang Theory, dark matter, 3 types of galaxies, and more! It's a short but interesting lesson. There will be an open notes quiz for this lesson on 11/22. *MATH AND SCIENCE BINDER CHECK ON 11/18-19* A binder check is done to make sure that students have all of the required papers from the term in their binders, clipped in, and in order.
